Chassepark

Chassépark transformed into a vast outdoor museum

Chassépark is a unique location in Breda. It is a green, pedestrian-friendly area with a large square. Many of the festival’s exhibition venues are within a stone’s throw of the park, which is an ideal location for Breda Photo’s outdoor exhibitions.

A selection from the programme

More than twenty photographers are exhibiting in the Chassépark. One of them is Frenchman Denis Darzacq. His series entitled ‘Hyper’ focuses on young people. Suspended in mid-air, they give their own interpretation of the concept of ‘TILT’.

Chris Jordan’s series ‘Intolerable Beauty' was inspired by the waste that our affluent society produces. His photographs feature piles of computer components and crushed cars.

‘Duiventil(t)’ by Joren de Weerdt depicts “pigeon fanciers” and pigeon racers. As interest in the hobby is declining, they are a dying breed.

Images of the disastrous consequences of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans are still firmly imprinted on everyone’s mind. Robert Polidori (Canada) went there to record the scenes for his series ‘After the Flood’.

A world behind glass

Michael Wolf, an American photographer, took photos of high-rise flats and offices in Chicago. In ‘Transparent City’, the emphasis is not on the buildings but on the people who live or work in them. We see them through the glass.

For his photographic series ‘War and peace' , the Dutch photographer Peter de Krom went in search of people who have a fascination with the Second World War. He photographed them at re-enactments of important situations during that war.

The Mexican border
The wall that is supposed to stop people entering the United States from Mexico is the focal point of the work of English photographer Simon Norfolk. The series entitled ‘The Arizona/Mexico Border’ shows a lively city on one side of the border and, on the other side, the deserted hills lit up by powerful security lights.

In Texas, Peter Granser sought out ‘Signs’ in society - in the literal sense. In his exhibition of that name we see photos that the German artist took of a sign with a slogan, for example, or a text on a fence surrounding a closed-off area.

Tip
The Stadsgalerij on the Oude Vest is an excellent starting point for visiting the outdoor exhibitions in the Chassépark.
