Jasper De Meester

First name: Jasper
Preposition: De
Surname: Meester
Country of origin: Belgium
Subtheme: Order and chaos, Society, Demographics, Culture, Architecture

Jasper De Meester (Belgium, 1990)

studied photography at the Royal Academy

of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work for

BREDAPHOTO revolves around a pressing

question: What will happen if cities continue

to get bigger? Around 50 percent of the

world’s population already lives in cities,

and it is expected that by 2050 that figure

will have risen to 75 percent. Will there still

be enough room for us all? In De Meester’s

work a picture is pieced together that seems

familiar. Further investigation, however,

shows that these images are not as realistic

as they at first seemed. They are the result

of a digital process, in which satellite photos

of houses are stuck together and most

of the streets and the vehicles are removed.

The result is an enormous and excessively

orderly city.
