Sarah Carlier

First name: Sarah
Surname: Carlier
Country of origin: Belgium
Subtheme: Society, Culture

Sarah Carlier (Belgium, 1981) studied

photographic design at the Royal Academy

of Art in The Hague and at AKV|St.Joost in

Breda. She had a training placement with

Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer.

Carlier now lives in The Hague and exhibits

much of her work there: her solo exhibition

Between Low and High Tide (2006)

was shown there. She has been given a

number of commissions in The Hague:

by The Hague Municipal Council, the

Spui Theatre and the Ministry of Housing,

Spatial Planning and the Environment.

From 2007 to 2009 she was an organising

member of The Hague’s artists’ initiative

Paparazzi.

Carlier’s works are documentary in nature

and focus on the human quest for happiness

and security in a changing society. In

her video installation The Play (2008) she

explores the boundaries of photography

and investigates how people cling to tradition

and custom to shield themselves from

external change.
