Steven Huybrechts

First name: Steven
Surname: Huybrechts
Country of origin: Belgium
Subtheme: Environment, Society, Culture, Architecture

Steven Huybrechts (Belgium, 1987)

studied photography at the Royal Academy

of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In his work he

investigates the public space. He photographs

the interiors of public buildings, urbanised

landscapes and urban structures.

These are very often characterised by their

bleakness and loneliness.

Volumes deals with the urban landscape,

created by man to meet his functional

norms and needs. The public space is made

by and in the service of man. Thanks to its

focus on functionality, such architecture

produces increasingly abstract volumes,

and consequently seems to be losing its

human element. To make matters worse,

ever more of such buildings are being constructed

in an already overfull landscape.

The city is becoming a maze, in which man

has lost his grip on reality. In his photos

Huybrechts explores the urban landscape,

paying particular attention to the sculptural

quality of its buildings. In this light, his

work can be seen as a critical monument of

our age.
