Zie 't Zo

First name: Zie
Preposition: 't
Surname: Zo
Country of origin: Netherlands
Subtheme: Conflict, Society, Culture

Mark van der Zouw (the Netherlands, 1975) studied at the Fotogram Photo

Academy in Amsterdam and subsequently worked as press photographer for the newspaper Het Parool. Since 2003 he has been a freelancer and he has taken photos all over the world. Van der Zouw has won several

prizes at the Zilveren Camera, an annual photo competition for Dutch photojournalists.

Corné van der Stelt (the Netherlands, 1979) also studied at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam and had a training placement at Nieuwe Revu Magazine. He now contributes to several magazines, both in the Netherlands and abroad, and has specialised in portrait photography.

Van der Zouw and Van der Stelt work together on documentary and commercial

photo projects under the name Zie ’t Zo (See it Thus). Their series The Eel Fisherman won them first prize at the Zilveren Camera 2009 in the category Everyday News. In Still-Life they photographed the domestic interiors

of solitary people who are completely neglecting themselves. We see houses in

which the junk and other waste is piled high. Although such a situation would be

unthinkable for others, for these people it is entirely liveable. Their dereliction often goes hand in hand with mental disorders, such as a mania for collecting things.
