Youth project

The Breda Photo youth project is being organised in cooperation with secondary schools in Breda and the surrounding area. The aim of the project is to generate enthusiasm for photography among 14 to 20-year olds – enthusiasm not only for the medium and the technology, but above all as a way of looking at themselves and the world in a different way.

Contrast translated into lesson programme

Within the Youth Project, the TILT them has been concretised as ‘contrast’. Contrast can be approached as a subject but also as a technique – as in colour contrast, focus/depth of field and motion blur.

At the participating schools, during lessons in cultural and artistic appreciation, pupils will discuss their visions of chaos in the world. The discussions will be based on images by exhibiting photographers. Time will also be devoted to the basic techniques of photography. Breda Photo has developed a special lesson programme. The pupils will work on portrait photography in class and learn about the effects of, for example, light and camera position. They will also have the opportunity to go on a tour of the Graphic Design Museum, where they can see Carl de Keyzer’s ‘Trinity’ exhibition and answer a number of questions.

How Breda’s young people perceive the changing world

This should provide the pupils with enough inspiration and enough of a technical background to embark on their own work. How can they translate their own perceptions into a photo in order to 'visualise' them? In the final lesson, the pupils themselves will take the floor. They will present their series of photos and the story behind it. But that is not all. The photos will be posted on the web pages of the Youth Project at www.bredaphoto.nl. The total collection of images will provide a cross-section of the perceptions of Breda's young people with regard to the changing world in 2010.

Public Prize and Jury Prize

Visitors to the website can vote for the photographs that have been submitted. The pupils can promote the photos, by linking them to their social networking page for example, and they can share their personal photo page by e-mail. The most popular photos will be entered for an attractive prize. In addition to a Public Prize, prizes will also be awarded by a jury of experts. All the prizes will be presented during the close of the festival on Sunday 24 October at Mezz in Breda. Obviously, the winning photos will receive special attention – for example in a presentation at a popular location in Breda.
