Stadsgalerij: the beating heart of the festival

The Stadsgalerij is the hub of the festival. Facilities include an Information Desk that visitors can go to if they have questions about the exhibitions, locations, lectures, etc. In the building on the Oude Vest there is also a special festival bookstore, where books by the participating photographers and other photographic books are on sale. The special festival catalogue is also on sale there.

The Stadsgalerij is housing four exhibitions apart from the practical sections.

The Dutch photographer Miriam Donkers followed her brother Paul during his General Military Training (AMO), where he was preparing for his posting to Afghanistan. The series ‘AMO’ shows how Paul, a young man with doubts, gradually developed into a trained soldier ready to be deployed in war zones.

A more light-hearted life

Als je goed kijkt zitten ze overal’ (‘If you look carefully you’ll see them everywhere’) is a combination of a photo series and a book. This work by Irene Cècile (NL) is an attempt to respond to the crisis. The everyday things around us offer plenty of inspiration for a different view of life – provided we are aware of them. In that respect the book’s subtitle, ‘Handleiding voor een speelser leven’ (‘Guide to living a more light-hearted life’), speaks volumes.

Ladyboys famous in Thailand
The identity problems of transsexuals in Thailand are the theme of the photo series ‘Lotus’ by the Belgian photographers Max Pinckers and Quinten de Bruin. The duo followed the ‘ladyboys’ who are a fixture of Thailand’s culture. Some of them are even film stars, models or sporting icons. ‘Lotus’ is a probing look at the world of transsexuals.

March!
What happens when you ask an over-sized brass band to play in a very small room? We can see the answer in the video installation ‘The Play’ by the Belgian photographer Sarah Carlier. Sarah instructed the band to ‘march up and down a bit’. But how do you do that?

Flu panic
The hype surrounding Mexican flu in 2009 prompted Jasmijn Labadie (NL) to produce the video installation ‘Infectiehysterie’ (‘Infection Hysteria’), which shows how the huge worldwide panic generated by the flu took on grotesque forms.
